Brick Diagram

I investigate the metaphoric possibilities of a brick—how a mundane yet ubiquitous object can be associated with so many elements of human history, labor, and experience. The brick is both a constructed object and an element of construction, a repetitive element—a part of a system that rarely stands on its own.

In the diagram, I use the idea of the brick as a building block, as a visual feature in the composition, and allude to different associations with brick: a pathway, a wall, a pile of rubble. Images explore the role of brick as it is used to build structures and represent larger systems.
